PLEASE READ: We are moving the community   02/15/18

Dear Community friends and family,   After great consideration, we are moving the Grandparents.com community to Facebook Groups effective March 15, 2018.   This wasn’t an easy decision, but we want to bring our communities together and believe the best place to do so is through Facebook’s groups feature. We’re so appreciative of you and the diverse conversations and opinions you have provided over the past 9 years. Your stories and amazing advice have helped so many readers, and have reached thousands of GP.com users. We encourage you to retrieve any information you want to retain as the forum will only be accessible by the admin after March 15, 2018. We’ve created a closed Facebook group called Mothers-in-Law Unplugged where we welcome you to continue the conversations around grandparenting, family, and in-law relationships, and any general topics we discuss here. As the group is closed and each user must be approved, your friends and family on Facebook won’t see any of your activity. Request to join the group here: http://bit.ly/milunplugged Thank you to all of our past and current users. You helped build our community, and we look forward to continuing to interact with you in the Facebook groups. If you have any questions about the groups and privacy, let’s chat about here:   Sincerely,   The Grandparents.com Team

  1. Do your kids/GC get out in the snow? Making "angels?" Building snowpeople or snow forts? Having snowball fights? Sledding? Skiing? Do you get out there w/ them or do you leave that to the parents (if you're a GP),  the GPs (if you're a parent) or other adult relatives or friends? Or are they old enough to be out there by themselves? Or does your family just not "do" snow? Or??
  2. Do you tend to feel sadder/"bluer" during the winter months? Are you more likely to feel "down" or depressed when days are shorter and there is less sunlight? In short, do you experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) at this time of year? And if so, how do you cope?
  3. Winter Weddings

Would you hold/have you ever held a wedding in the winter? Or, for that matter, have you ever been a bridesmaid (or groomsman) in winter wedding or attended one as a guest? What do you see as the pluses, if any? Minuses?
  4. With Thanksgiving behind us and the December holidays coming up, I'm starting to hear Christmas music on the radio and in some stores. No doubt, many stations and some other stores wait a little longer before beginning to play holiday favorites. What's your preference? Are you already joyously listening to Christmas carrols, etc. whenever you can? Do you avoid them all through the season? Do you enjoy them in small doses or punctuated by more "regular" fare?   In short, what are you/will you be listening to as the holidays approach?
  5. Holiday Traditions

Hello all, I feel like I might get stoned for asking about winter holidays in October but I am willing to take that chance! I like planning before the storm hits I am curious how all of you combined your holidays with your spouse/partner? How about with your new extended family? Of course you and your spouse each have your own traditions and come from different back grounds, how did you mix them together? Any suggestions on how to make the transition smooth or deal with ruffled feathers? Also, if you have any fun traditions that you started with your spouse, I would love to hear about them!
  6. Your Health in Winter

Brrr! It's cold! At least where I live. Time to start thinking about winter. Do you find you protect your health more in winter, in the effort to avoid colds and flu etc? Or that you take lesser care of yourself b/c you're more likely to eat warm comfort foods and partake of  such drinks as hot chocolate? Or ??   And, if you will, do you find yourself increasing, decreasing or maintaining exercise schedules and other health routines?
  7. About February Babies!

Is your new child/GC or will your new child/GC be a February baby? If so,  please let us know (no specific birth dates, however - too identifying!) And please feel free to tell us all about them! (Please do not give us more than the first name, though - again, too identifying! And If you're a GP or other relative and would like to post pics,  please make sure you have the parents' permission, unless you have custody.)   ETA: You might also want to check out the thread, "Winter Babies!" http://community.gra...-winter-babies/
  8. About January Babies!

Is your new child/GC or will your new child/GC be a January baby? If so,  please let us know (no specific birth dates, however - too identifying!) And please feel free to tell us all about them! (Please do not give us more than the first name, though - again, too identifying! And If you're a GP or other relative and would like to post pics,  please make sure you have the parents' permission, unless you have custody.)   ETA: You might also want to check out the thread, "Winter Babies!" http://community.gra...-winter-babies/
  9. Do you have any winter hobbies?

Do you enjoy any hobbies/sports that are associated w/ winter - skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, ice fishing, etc?
  10. Mild Winter - A Plus or a Minus?

As I said, elsewhere, I keep hearing this is going to be a very mild winter. A part of me is glad, if that's true, b/c that means warmer temperatures and fewer/no worries about black ice or my car getting stuck in snow, etc. I recall almost getting into a big accident a couple of years ago, due to black ice. Yikes!   But OTOH, a part of me feels bad b/c I love when my DGC get to play in the snow, making angels or building a snowman, etc. And, right now, the temps in my area are unseasonably high. We had a few cold days, but, for the most part, the weather has been way warmer than I've ever known it to be in December. It's nice - and yet... well... it feels weird...   Thoughts?
  11. Holiday Game

It's December - the month of Christmas, New Year's Eve and a few other holidays! With that in mind, lets play a variation on the Two-Word game that focuses on the various holidays and the winter season (and let's give some leeway, again, and allow 1-3-word expressions)! Each player starts their expression with the last letter of the one posted by the player before. IOWs. if I say Happy New Year you might say, Rudolph and the next player might say Ho! Ho! Ho! or Happy Hanukkah  or even hail. The words don't have to be related to the holidays or the winter season though it would be nice, I think, if they were. And you don't have to bold the first and last letters being used the way I do, either.   I'll start below...
  12. Game: Have You Ever?

Let's play the "Have You Ever?" game! I start, say, by posting a question such as, "Have you ever gone ice fishing?" You reply, "Yes" or "No," perhaps with an added comment or two, and then ask your own "Have you ever?" question for the next poster to answer. Then they reply yes or no and ask their own question, etc. Sort of like TPAM. Get it? Your questions can be related to New Year's Eve/Day or winter but they don't have to be. I'll start below...
  13. What are some of your favorite winter activities? Sledding? Skiing? Ice skating? Building a snowman (perhaps together w/ the kids in the family)?  And, if you will, do you get to share any of these w/ your LOs, teens, AC (adult children), GC (grandchildren) or any other relatives? Especially (but not only) during the holidays?
  14. To all those of you who are expecting to be hit with a major snowstorm this weekend - hope you and yours stay warm and safe!   Of course, I'm also wondering how it affects/how you think it might affect your caregiving situation. If you have the time and inclination, please let us know. But again, mostly, just stay safe!
  15. What's your favorite warn-up food or drink in the cold weather? A steaming bowl of soup? A yummy hot chocolate? What food or drink are you most likely to reach/make/ask for first when you' come inside from freezing temperatures? And while you're at it, got any good warm-'em-up recipes?
  16. Game: "Holly Jolly" Fun!

It's a variation on the Two-Word game (and let's give some leeway, again, and allow 1-3-word expressions). Each player starts their expression with the last letter of the one posted by the player b4. IOWs. if I say Happy New Year you might say, Rudolph and the next player might say Ho! Ho! Ho! or Happy Kwanzaa or even hail or hat. The words don't have to be related to the holidays or the winter season, obviously, though it would be nice, I think, if they were. And you don't have to bold the first and last letters being used the way I do, either.   I'll start below...
  17. Love a fun holiday song, such as "Frosty the Snowman" or "We Wish You a Merry Christmas?" Or is your favorite a religious Christmas hymn, such as "Silent Night?" Or perhaps it's a Hanukkah or Kwanzaa tune? Or just a delightful melody about winter activities, such as sleighrides or ice skating? Or?? Whatever your favorite is/favorites are, please let us know below.   Then again, maybe you love all that holiday music? Or, if you're totally honest, are getting tired of it? Please feel free to let us know that, too...
