PLEASE READ: We are moving the community   02/15/18

Dear Community friends and family,   After great consideration, we are moving the Grandparents.com community to Facebook Groups effective March 15, 2018.   This wasn’t an easy decision, but we want to bring our communities together and believe the best place to do so is through Facebook’s groups feature. We’re so appreciative of you and the diverse conversations and opinions you have provided over the past 9 years. Your stories and amazing advice have helped so many readers, and have reached thousands of GP.com users. We encourage you to retrieve any information you want to retain as the forum will only be accessible by the admin after March 15, 2018. We’ve created a closed Facebook group called Mothers-in-Law Unplugged where we welcome you to continue the conversations around grandparenting, family, and in-law relationships, and any general topics we discuss here. As the group is closed and each user must be approved, your friends and family on Facebook won’t see any of your activity. Request to join the group here: http://bit.ly/milunplugged Thank you to all of our past and current users. You helped build our community, and we look forward to continuing to interact with you in the Facebook groups. If you have any questions about the groups and privacy, let’s chat about here:   Sincerely,   The Grandparents.com Team

Welcome new members... BUT...

Question

This area of our forum is: Member Questions

Technical glitches? Questions? Anything not covered in the FAQ can be asked here. All topics must be related to the community.

Please read:

New members MUST amass 10 posts before they can start a topic of their own. Jump into conversations around each category and get a feel of the forum, but please do not bump (reply to) old threads that are more than about three months old.

To help to amass your 10 posts so you can start your own topic in any of our forums, click on one and reply to a pinned (green thumb tack) topic.  These topics are open without worry about bumping.

Our most active forum is MILA:

Look around, I'm sure you can find a conversation to participate in.

UPDATE:  The administration has given us permission to move a post that isn't  a Technical glitch? Question? Anything not covered in the FAQ can be asked here. All topics must be related to the community.

So any post to vent or ask for advice will be moved to a more appropriate forum.

Meanwhile, if you'd like some ideas about how (or how not to) amass those 10 posts mentioned above, you might want to check out the following thread in Club Newcomer:

This ^^^^ includes a list of lightweight threads where you (general) may feel very comfortable posting.

ETA: 10 posts are also required to open your own blog (see Blogs, above, left) or use the Gallery.

Please also avoid hijacking another member's thread. Talking about your own concerns/problems as a way of showing empathy or to share a solution is fine. But seeking advice for/discussion of your own issues, not so much. If you can't open your own thread, as yet, please look for a more general one  - usually posts started by a moderator - and comment in there instead.

Another thought - If you read a thread from a few years back, please realize that rules that are in place now may not have been in place then. So comments that are violations now may not have been violations back then. In fact, please understand that the current rules are not retroactive - we moderators don't/aren't required to go back and delete/edit posts in those very old threads.

As you can see, the current guidelines were posted in January 2015 though they have been further refined since then:

Though this ^^^^ says "on this forum," these rules actually apply to the entire Community - Forums, Blogs, Gallery, etc. In fact, there is a thread like this one or the link to it in every forum.

The GP.com definitions of "personal attack" were posted in April 2013 and also further refined since then (see also # 5d in the guidelines thread):

Since the "alert" is over and the "Alert" thread now locked, bringing this back up to the front.
