S/O of "Granny pod for visiting?": Would you stay in a GP/IL suite in your long distance son's or daughter's home?

5 posts in this topic

When visiting your AC's (adult child's) and CIL's (child-in-law's) far away home, would you consider staying w/ them in a "granny pod"/IL (inlaw) suite? Or would you agree to bridge the distance by relocating to such a suite?

Or, if you're a LD (long distance) AC or CIL, would you consider having your mom/MIL and/or dad/FIL stay in such a suite for visits? Or perhaps move into one?

I'm not sure what a granny pod is...but by the sound of it, it sounds lovely.  Close access *and* some privacy?  Yes, please!  :D

It's a small 'casita' or guest house that sits in a corner of the back yard...it's usually a studio with a bath...

There are also medical 'granny' pods.  We actually looked into one before SIL and her family moved in with FIL. He was ADAMANT that he wasn't going to an assisted living facility, he still has some very old school 'nursing home' images in his head that are difficult to part with. The medical units can check some things and have a station to check others, including blood sugar, blood pressure, oxygen levels, etc. There are handicap bars within reach no matter where you are in the house. He would have his own bed/living space and bathroom and there were some with kitchenettes. However, we hit a road block because FIL is a very large man (over 350 pounds and over 6 feet tall) and the granny pods are very small spaces to begin with. The door to the pod wasn't actually big enough to get a walker through easily (think oversized walker for a very large person) and he would have had no where to park his scooter that he could have easily accessed it.

It's a great concept in theory, but some of the practicalities are harder. If you need a popup in-law suite for a single person and your property has scope to add another building to utilities, and you can get permits to add to your property (some HOAs won't allow, some counties won't allow more than one living quarter on a property) I think they are a great option.
